Medical Assistant Programs – Which Is Best for You?

If you are a senior in high school and are beginning to look through what programs you can consider in order to begin a career in the medical field, you may want to consider medical assistant programs that are offered in both online medical assistant schools and traditional schools, too.

Medical assistant programs afford you the chance to become a medical assistant and even provide you with the opportunity to pursue higher positions in the medical field, should you choose to do so.  Of course, the higher level the program you take, the better your chances of moving up the ladder from a medical assistant will be.

The associate’s degree program is the most common among all the medical assistant programs that are being offered in online and offline medical assistant schools.  It often consists of 67 units and can be finished within two years’ time.  Some medical assistant schools offer two tracks under the associate’s degree program: the clinical track and the administrative track, with the former allowing you to pursue a career in medical administration, such as a medical secretary, as a medical administrative assistant, or as an admitting clerk, and with the latter allowing you to pursue a clinical career as a medical assistant.

As you can see, the associate’s degree program does not limit your options because you can always choose a different career path if you feel that becoming a medical assistant is something you would rather not to do.  The choice is truly yours and being able to graduate with an Associate of Applied Sciences in Medical Assistance can definitely open more doors for you, compared to what you can do if you did not have any sort of degree at all.  So, why not take advantage of what the medical assistant programs have to offer.

Aside from the associate’s degree program, there are two other medical assistant programs that you can look over and decide to pursue—the bachelor’s degree program and the diploma program.  The bachelor’s degree program takes four years to complete, just like with any other bachelor’s degree program, and allows a graduate to have more choices as far as job opportunities are concerned.  The diploma program has 43 units and it takes a year or so to complete since it only has the core subjects in medical assisting and these are enough for a graduate to begin their medical assistant career.

When choosing from among the different medical assistant programs available in online and offline schools, it is important for you to remember what your goals are.  If your timeline is tight and you need to begin working sooner rather than later, you may want to go with the diploma program.  You can choose to play it safe by choosing the associate’s degree program since this covers some of the general subjects and core subjects.  However, if time is not of the essence and you want more professional opportunities later on in your career, stick with the bachelor’s degree program.
